When most people hear the term "Firewatch," they immediately think of firefighters battling blazes. However, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) defines Firewatch as a crucial preventative measure that involves assigning people to designated areas for the express purpose of detecting and responding to potential fire hazards.

In fact, Firewatch duties may include notifying the fire department and building occupants of an emergency, preventing a fire from occurring or protecting the public from fire and life safety dangers. These duties are often carried out by San Fire's Deputy Fire Marshals in national forests across the country, but they're not limited to just one group or organization.

What is Firewatch?

"We're basically driving to the county-side and either get out of the vehicle and walk, or drive around the woods. Looking for potential fire hazards, making sure to get them removed if it's possible."

How does one become a Firewatcher?

"Well, you can't really become a "fire watcher". It's one of many duties of a Deputy Fire Marshal. So basically, all of the Deputies can do a fire watch. If you become a Deputy Fire Marshal you're good to do firewatch patrols."

How many Fire Lookout Towers are there and where are they located?

There are three (3) Fire Lookout Towers in total, see the map down below as Deputy Fire Marshal Adams provided us with a picture;

Do you have any stories in regards to spotting a fire, reporting it, and later on attending the scene?

Deputy Fire Marshal Adams commented that she has "no stories worth telling".

What are Fire Lookout Towers used for?

"So, some Deputy Marshals from the Grapeseed HQ are stationed on them — they're usually up here over the night, keeping an eye open for potential fire hazards. And if they spot anything, they're contacting us and the fire department as well.

What should someone do when they spot a fire in any of the forests?

"Call 9-1-1 and report immediately. Along with San Fire, the Fire Department will receive and respond to the call as well, trying to arrive at the scene as fast as possible and extinguish the fire as well as prevent it to spread at all.

In conclusion, Firewatch is a term that encompasses a vital preventative measure that helps to ensure the safety of workers and the public in a variety of industries. Whether it's preventing fires during welding operations, protecting construction sites, or monitoring industrial facilities, Firewatch personnel play a critical role in fire prevention and safety.
