- [SHOW]
- Rustin spent most of his life in a small town from Montana, called Gardiner. He had part of a pretty decent childhood, but also a mundane one. There's only so much you can do in a such a small town as Gardiner. Rustin grew up on a ranch, in a big family, a family of tradition. Most of the men in his family worked in law enforcement, some of them joined the Park Rangers (like his father), while others were part of the sheriff department or the Montana's Department of Livestock. Rustin had been surrounded, growing up, by all of these men, that took on the duty to protect the others and enforce the law. It can leave quite the impression, especially on a young boy. Rustin tried, right from the start to distant himself from the family's traditions and the family's name. Everyone referred to the Blackfields' as the "family of cops".
While growing up, Rustin developed an obsessive ambition. He wanted to build his life on his own terms, not based on his family's legacy. He didn't knew exactly how he'll achieve that, but he was determined to find out. After finishing high school, he went to the Montana State University. Even though, he wanted to part himself away from the family's name, he couldn't really part himself away from the fact that he was still a Blackfield young man, and the Blackfields', have always been known to also be pragmatic. Pragmatism and law enforcement, work hand in hand. This being said, the most pragmatic choice Rustin, could've thought of, was to apply for an associate degree for: "Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration". It was one of the most straight forward degrees he could've applied for and in Montana, the ability to set up a heating system can get you a really well paid job.
Things were looking up for Rustin and his ideals. He was already learning a very different trade than the one of serving as a law enforcement agent and he was paving up his own path in life, without any help from the family. Two years had passed and college was now over for Rustin, he got his associate degree and now he was in the next chapter of his life. At first he tried to get a job as a technician in Bozeman, but no one would hire him, without any proper experience. A few weeks had passed since his graduation and Rustin was still unemployed. In that moment he knew he had only one valid option left, to go back to Gardiner, back to his family.
Two days after returning back to his hometown, he accepted to work as a store clerk for a souvenir shop. He was back again, close to his family and their influence. Even though his family was proud for his achievements, there were days, many days in fact when they'd nag him for making the wrong choice, wasting his own time, "You're back here, why not join the rangers?". These kind of small "incentives" would go on for a year, until Rustin said it's enough. He packed his bags, said his goodbyes and jumped behind the wheel of his truck. Rusting figured he had enough cash to put a few states between him and his family.
Looking back, he'd probably say that was an underappreciation. He drove for days upon days, until he arrived in San Andreas and somehow, this place felt like it was far away enough for him, in order to have a fresh start. He took on the first job he saw, which was of a bus driver. It didn't feel like a tough job, and this way, he got to learn the city. There've been moments when he had to deal with hooligans and troublemakers, but he pushed through. Afterall, slowly driving a bus through the city, was pretty pleasant, he definitely enjoyed it, but it wasn't enough.
By having the sole focus of being different and not wanting to be like the rest of the men from his family, Rustin didn't really allow himself to see how he actually feels about being a law enforcement agent. But now, years later, being far away from his family, he realizes how "close" he really is to them and how drawn he is to the idea of being part of the law.
He heard of the fire marshals, a few months back, while he was freelancing as a technician. So he started to do his research, find out what are the duties of a fire marshal. The more he read about them, the more he felt like becoming a fire marshal was a perfect fit for him. Being able to prevent fires and being part of arson investigations, sounded right from the start like a very interesting career and a very interesting life. He spent his childhood seeing so many members of his family, wearing uniforms and badges, being greeted by neighbors and family friends. He saw his family helping others, protecting them. Reflecting on all of those memories made him think that, in reality there's more to it than just a badge or an uniform, it's about how you can help others. Now, he knows that this is how he wants to give back, to help his new community, by being part of the fire marshals.
It's true that he'd be the first fire marshal from his family, but he's certain of what he wants. As much as he accepts how much his family is part of him and how much he had been influenced, by them and their duty while growing up. He still wants to do his duty, on his own terms. Work in a new environment, somewhere where he has to learn everything from scratch, where there's no one to give him an advice. He wants to set a precedent in the family and have something of his own.
