By all accounts, Summer Madison had her act together. She was the girl with the Plan. From the moment she could speak she was asking - demanding - answers from the already middle-aged, dowdy and frequently bemused single father who - though he’d been as startled by the birth of this squalling and strong-willed bundle of opinions as he was by the death of the pretty young wife in childbirth, seemed to approach single parenthood with as much aplomb as his indignant new overlord would allow.

Summer seldom seemed to notice the absence of her mother - or to mention it if she did. Oh, certainly she’d asked, made an effort to learn what had happened to her, and why, and what might have been done to prevent it; but overall seemed to accept her mother’s death in childbirth as immutable. Not that she suffered from the lack; rural Georgia is rife with neighbor ladies and relations and a host of other well-meaning but overtly intrusive busy-bodies. The words “it takes a village” were the refrain of her little-girl years - a mantra quickly dispelled by her ofttimes overly-blunt father. “Horse shit.” He’d said succinctly. “Tell them to mind their business, or bring it to me.” And so she had. Again, and again, and - once she’d learned to omit the swearing and to nice it up with good southern manners, the instruction served her well. The seemingly endless stream of outraged and red-faced church ladies dwindled, and the tiny Madison family - Pops, Summer, and a lemon beagle named Ace Face - were left largely to their own devices.

Dissatisfied with what he deemed the sub-par public education offered in rural Georgia, and confronted with a busy, inquisitive child to raise, Pops Madison set about augmenting her school curriculum with one of his own. If the state couldn’t offer her a fitting classical education, then he could - and did. For Summer, this meant everything was a lesson, every question had an answer, and she must only find it. Accountability, responsibility, duty, drive. Learning was lifted from the pages of literature, of history, and applied to the world around them. Teaching moments ranged from the harsh, following a brief foray into shoplifting; to the hilarity of reverse-engineering a chocolate chip cookie; to a heated argument over whether or not stars really were just “big balls of gas” like Puumba claimed in the Lion King. This last proved pivotal for young Summer. After having been proven wrong, she sulked for a good long while, but eventually emerged from her room and announced that she’d just have to go up and see them for herself, and that Pops would need to teach her to fly.

Madison Air was a small company, but a thriving one, and family-owned; a pair of crop dusters with a pilot for each, and her father’s name on the building. And so it was that when Summer made up her mind to touch the sky; Pops was ready. The old Air Tractor in the barn was the perfect training ground for a precocious ten year old, and she had a lot to learn. And if that learning began with sweeping the expansive hangar? With cleaning tools before she ever set finger on an aircraft? So be it. The back half of that hangar became Summer’s domain - and remained so for much of her life; the makeshift classroom playing host to childish antics, late-night astronomy lessons, even an ill-advised slumber party later in her teen years.

Restoring the old crop duster was only the first step in what would become a lifelong dream. Having set such a daunting goal; Summer was determined to reach it. Much like her father, she found the public school system lacking, and knew something more rigorous was in order. Nobody. Nobody. Nobody would have figured her for a prep school girl. But she’d done her due diligence, and was as stubborn about this as she was about anything - everything. Securing the scholarship was simpler than arranging a ride. For the former she had only to apply, write a convincing essay, and wait. For transport, she had to dicker. A bargain was struck. The hour-long commute was to become study time. Books, not the radio. Pops was rarely stern, but he stood firm on this. He’d drive her into Savannah five days a week until she had a license, and then she’d do for herself. But she’d learn something on the journey. Undeterred by hard work; Summer applied herself to her studies, to the sciences she hated and the math she didn’t, and even the languages that confounded and frustrated her. The hours in the car became a boon. Time to read, to recite, to memorize, to practice and debate and *excel*.

Despite her rigorous academic load, heavy with as many AP classes as she could cram into it; Summer was determined to immerse herself as well in the ROTC offered by the school, to prepare for what she’d long known would be a military life. She took to cadet life like a second home; finding satisfaction in the discipline and order. Here, finally, she’d forged friendships with others who shared her vision, understood her ambition. It was there she met “Matty” Mathisen, the man she’d later wed. Thrown together by virtue of their similar names, and pushed apart by temperament, the duo were soon known as “that” couple; squabbling as often as not, but always finding their way. It was a legacy which followed them throughout prep school, as well as their years at the US Naval Academy, and to a hasty wedding before their first deployment.

Navy life was good to Summer - for a time. Though no hurdle had managed to shake her life’s pursuit; helicopter training had at least redirected it; and given her a greater connection to the true service of military life. Not that it was all sentiment and air time. Between the job and the constant separation, the stress of active duty on her marriage was telling, and only a few years had passed before the marriage, so newly launched, was already nearing its end. It was into this moment that the harsh realities of combat intruded, and everything changed.

She’d known from the moment they’d pulled her from her chopper that it was the end of the world; the end of her career, which for her amounted to the same thing. It required only the sympathetic looks from the hospital staff to confirm what she already suspected. Considering her lifelong pursuit of Navy life, releasing her from it was comparatively swift. The reconstructed hip would preclude her from service, but qualify her for retirement and a staggering amount of paperwork, physical therapy, and recriminations.

Their union hadn’t always been happy, but she’d never not loved Matty. So the news, when it came, was the final blow. Stone-faced and quick, but kind enough; they’d stood in her hospital room with their careful words and an envelope she didn’t want to touch. Matty was gone. For the first time in her life, Summer fled. In full retreat, she found herself running, not home to Georgia, to Pops and the sweet southern air; but to the push and rush of Liberty City. To the house in Alderney they’d bought and never furnished, standing cold and empty. Really, it was the perfect backdrop for the self-destructive spiral that followed.

The subsequent two years passed in a haze of liquor, therapy, and late nights. Liberty City was just across the bridge, and was always on, always on fire - proverbially speaking - and always ready to offer up any diversion a heart-sick young woman might think she needed. Waiting. She was waiting, somehow, to snap out of it. To be a person again, to be ready, whatever that meant. To be anyone - anything else.

Salvation. Redemption? Healing. The hand she needed came in the form of a familiar face at the end of the bar. A friend from the service, and he was kicking off a project. Did she want a job? Much to her own surprise, she’d jumped at it. Hell yeah, she could break some video games. Layabout Gaming proved to be the lifeline she’d needed. Some new focus, some new task - minor as it was, something to push against and to grow with.

It was another half year before she was able to really look around, take stock, and make the first best choice she’d made in a long while. Summer had to get out of Liberty City. Her job was remote, mobile, and she could go as far away as she wanted - as far away as possible. Los Santos gleamed with new possibilities, a few friends, and the distance she needed to carve out something new. She found a realtor online and used Matty’s life insurance to buy a condo on the beach. Then she sold the house in Alderney, hired a moving company, and was gone. Three thousand miles cross country on a motorcycle is just the thing to kick off a fresh start.

“Anyone not contributing is a blight to society.” Her Pops is a man of strong opinions, and his words often strike home. It took longer than she’d like to admit, but in time Summer took stock. She’d been brought up to make an impact; to serve, to do something productive and useful and fun as it was, testing video games for a service buddy wasn’t her kind of productive. Drawn as she was to service life; Summer had naturally fallen in with friends in Los Santos’ civil service branches - and even forged a burgeoning relationship with a local cop. She watched them live, and fight and struggle and cry and celebrate and live. Lives of service, of dedication. The Fire Marshals - SANFIRE - seemed to resonate with the protective instinct in her. A division dedicated to calamity prevention, intervention, as much as to investigation. To reclaiming the freedom from fear that the people of Los Santos deserve.
